The Master Narrative is generally described as the colonially-derived story of events, emphasizing European perspectives. In contrast, the Counter Narrative offers accounts of history from diverse perspectives, with a critical examination of the widely accepted, colonially-derived story. Reading or writing counter-narratives is part of a process of de-colonizing, or dismantling and questioning the histories that are regularly read, repeated, and studied in mainstream education. Drawing on the materials from the second unit of the class (listed below), please give two examples of a Master Narrative and two examples of a Counter Narrative. For your discussion of the Master Narrative note what the Narrative is, and who is sharing/telling it. For your discussion of the Counter Narrative, please note what the Narrative is, who is speaking, and how it is different from the Master Narrative. Structure should be - Section 1 should be an introduction: open your essay in a creative and engaging way, tell the reader what your topic is and why it is important - Section 2 should be your first example of the Master Narrative. What is the Narrative you have chosen to focus on, why, who is telling it? - Section 6 should offer closing thoughts: please summarize the Narratives you discussed, why you chose those, the differences between Master and Counter narratives, and how perspectives may be impacted by studying one or the other.
