Each lab includes instructions or questions requiring the use of the internet to complete the task. Please use complete sentences and appropriate headings where applicable. If included, refer to the rubric below to see how you will be graded. Note that links open a new browser window.

You have learned quite a lot about marketing so far, but there is always more to discover! Fortunately, marketers are at work giving you new examples every day. Some of these will be so successful that they change the industry. Others will miss the mark, and companies will have to spend even more money adjusting after a marketing misfire. All of these instances present opportunities to learn about marketing.

Search the internet and find two good examples of marketing campaigns that are no more than two years old. One should be B2B and the other B2C. Look at them as a lesson in marketing and answer the following for each:

  • Who is the target market? How does the marketing cater to them?
  • What is the message about the product? How do images, slogans, or taglines convey this message?
  • Which of the Ps is most highlighted in the marketing mix? Why is that the focus of the campaign?
  • Which other Ps are included in the marketing mix? How are they used?
  • Why does this marketing mix work so well? What makes it one of the best examples of marketing?
  • How does the marketing differ between B2B and B2C?
  • How can marketers take the success of this marketing and apply the techniques to other products?

There are also opportunities to learn what not to do, so once you have explored some good examples of marketing, find one instance of a marketing fail that is no more than two years old. Answer the following questions:

  • Who is the target market? How does the marketing cater to them?
  • What is the message about the product? How do images, slogans, or taglines convey this message?
  • What did marketers think the impact would be? What was it actually?
  • What went wrong with this marketing? What did marketers fail to consider?
  • If you could go back revise this marketing, what changes would you make?
