Because of the McCane/Feingold BiPartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002, soft money- unlimited contributions to the national political parties for "party-building" activities- was banned from elections in the U.S. This seemed like a good thing at the time, but since then it has led to the growth of 527 groups.

Now, 527 groups are under attach. Recently, the courts have imposed huge fines for their attack ads during the 2004 presidential election.

1) Explain what a 527 is, as well as the controversy surrounding it.

2) Discuss the impact of 527's on the 2004 election, citing specific examples of groups that found ways around theMcCain/Feingold bill, and their impact on the election. You will need to do some online research to adequately answer this topic!
