Assignment:

Given the differences between formative and summative assessment, teachers must deliberately plan when it is most effective to use each type of assessment. Formative assessment allows teachers to gauge whether students are learning what they are intended to learn during the lesson. It's usually informal and allows teachers to redirect or adjust their lesson if necessary. Summative assessment is usually done at the end of a lesson or unit and informs whether students learned what they were intended to learn.

Review this week's learning activities about assessment and technology.

  • What are some examples of formative and summative assessment strategies you would use while teaching science? Justify your examples.
  • How can teachers use assessment data to inform their planning, instruction, and student learning?
  • What types of technology, other than interactive videos, could you utilize to enrich your science instruction?
