Assignment:
What I'd like you to do for the rest of this week is look at some examples of digital history and the publication of history on the web.
Your first task, after reading Cohen and Rosenzweig, is to visit at least 6 of the linked sites and discuss what you like about these websites as a whole, and what you don't. What works and what doesn't? What elements would you want to better incorporated into these projects and which do you think the creators should have avoided and why? To what extent do these projects reflect the digital history methods you've been reading about?
After answering those questions, list the links that you visited and try to categorize the sites are they digital archives, digital narratives, active or passive sites or a hybrid that incorporates all these categories? Then tell me which of these are your top3 and why you chose the sites you did? What makes them effective digital projects? Cohen and Rosenzweig's guide to Digital History is getting a bit dated, what newer technologies would you roll into these projects? and what historical value would they serve?
Then try to find 2 additional sites (on your own, not on our list) that you think are exemplary digital history sites and explain why you believe them to be valuable sites.
We'll revisit these lists closer to the midterm when we learn how to critically evaluate websites and digital projects. These sites will then become the subject of your midterm reviews.
