For most academic applications, you will be required to submit a CV. This is different from a resume, resumes are more common in business and non-academic positions. See here more information of CV versus resume.

CV - Curriculum Vitae basic elements:

  • Name, contact info, education info, employment info, research (presentations and publications), departmental and community service.
  • Use a neutral email, such as your FIU student email.
  • There is no set format. See this example of an Undergraduate CV
  • Don't have session that you have nothing to put on, or fill as "none".
  • Organize your CV according to the position that you are applying to. The order of the elements in the CV is flexible. Put the relevant information for that particular position first.
  • Use incomplete short sentences to describe the activities, specially if they are things that may not be too familiar or if you want to emphasize the skills you acquired from that experience that make you a better candidate.
  • Space is crucial! People will read your CV under 35 sec.
  • Not everything you've done has to go into the CV. Information that will be on you transcript shouldn't be on your CV.
  • For academic applications, make sure you include any awards and scholarships that you have earned. Indicate the year each award/scholarship was awarded.
