Case Study: You are a new RECE and have been hired to work in a preschool classroom. You are of course, very excited, and have a lot of great ideas to implement in the program. You spend your first few weeks getting to know the routine and most importantly the children. You notice that some of the children seem disregulated. Delanee, Jack and Reahn are among the few you have concerns about. They seem tired early in the day, are showing attention issues and have a lot of emotional outbursts. Things are little more chaotic than you would hope for, but you are determined to foster a sense of well-being within the group. You have worked on the classroom environment, have formed good relationships with the children, your colleague and the families and are ready for some next steps.

Based on this scenario and knowing how we can Nurture Brains and Learning with Movement, Water and Nurtrition answer the following questions:

1. Describe 3 examples of how you would encourage more movement on a regular basis for the children in your program. Link at least one of your examples to a skill from the ELECT document.

2. Describe 2 examples of how you would encourage more hydration on a regular basis for the children in your program.

3. Describe 1 example of how you would encourage healthy nutrition on a regular basis for children in your program. Note: that in a center based program you would not be in charge of menu planning or preparing meals so think beyond the food that they receive during these times. What else could you do?

4. Write a 4-5 sentence paragraph that you would email to parents in your program explaining that you are encouraging movement, hydration and nutrition in your program and why (include information about brain development and relate it to your responses from questions 1-3).
