For this application assignment I am asking you to demonstrate your understanding of classroom management by reflecting on your own experiences in classrooms.

Think of a class from your own academic history that you would consider as an example of good classroom management. Reflect on the qualities of that classroom and that teacher and respond to the following questions.

  • According to the expansion of Baumrind's parenting research to classrooms, how would you describe the well-managed classroom with regards to the two dimensions of supportiveness and demandingness?
  • What characteristics consistent with Kounin's research were evident with the well-managed classroom? Comment on as many as you can.
  • What other characteristics of more contemporary studies of classroom management were evident in the well-managed classroom?
  • What specific techniques were used in the well-managed classroom to deal with behavior problems? Comment on as many as you can.
  • Were specific classroom interventions being used? If so, comment upon them.
  • Were specific school-wide interventions being used? If so, comment upon them.
