This week we are focusing on Deontology or duty ethics. Consider the following scenario:

You are a medical administrator looking at new treatments for your facility. In one of the treatments, there is a 95% success rate curing an illness that frequently presents at your hospital. However, the medicine is researched through usage of stem cells.  Purchasing this medicine would result in a positive outcome for both the hospital and patients.  However, the use of stem cells is considered controversial for many people.

Directions:

  • Explain whether you think using the medication that depends on stem cell research is ethical being sure to explain your reasoning.
  • Appealing to the first two formulations of the categorical imperative, explain whether you think Kant's deontology would consider using the medication to be ethical.  To remind you, the 1st formulation is Universal Law. The 2nd formulation is Humans as End in Themselves (don't use others).
  • Explore the ramifications of the choice you have made.
