Interpretive writing:

While close reading, you will examine why the writer made certain decisions. You will discuss what they may be trying to communicate. You will also review the context in which the writing took place. Essentially, you will ask the writer questions as you read. Next, you will use their writing to find the answers. Then you will consider your own perspective on these same issues. To get started, you will read a short story. Then you will read the story several times, so you do not miss key details. You will develop your thesis of the story and write your paragraphs around your thesis statement. Your thesis is the clear interpretation or purpose for your analysis. You will support each of your main points with an example from the story. However, you will not summarize the story.

1. My First police stop:

Summary: How safe do you feel when the red and blue lights of a police officer flash behind you? Do you have reason to worry, or will you get off with a warning? The author struggles with an all-too-common situation for many Black Americans and leaves his audience to decide how they might feel and act.

Instructions

Prepare a 750 to 1000-word paper in which you do the following:

1. In at least one paragraph, present your thesis.

2. Create the body of your paper by doing the following:

• Provide a critical analysis of the story and defend your thesis.
• Provide 3-5 examples from the story as textual support for your thesis.

3. In at least one paragraph, write a conclusion. Summarize the main points you have presented.

4. Throughout your paper, cite any sources you have quoted, paraphrased, or summarized. Use standardized in-text citations. At the end of your paper, provide a standardized References list with the details of each source.

5. All writing must be professional. This includes the content of your paper as well as how you present the submission to the evaluators. You must use correct grammar, appropriate terminology, and organization throughout your paper.
