Assignment:

We examined the options for the expansion and use of Executive Power during time of national threat. This week we look specifically at actions taken within the Executive Branch that under interpretations of Executive power argued as allowable under current law, and the actions of Congress to expand these powers with new law. As a result, this week we will look specifically at these in the immediate post 9/11 period, and you will research and discuss an action or law of your choice.

Choose a Law (Authorization of Use of Military Force, USA Patriot Act, Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act, or other) or Executive Order (Homeland Security Presidential Directive or Other EO), or Executive action (expanded and explained by a White House Office of Legal Counsel Interpretation) taken in the post-9/11 period that you are interested in and was of importance for Homeland Security. Describe the Law or Executive Action of your choice and research any political, legal controversy, or potential damage to civil liberties that resulted or continue from it in Homeland Security.

Required:
