Case Study: Read through Chapter 211. Graphs and diagrams are visual representations of a relationship. Because images can be powerfully persuasive, the pictorial description offered by a graph or diagram often has a greater impact on a viewer than words or numbers alone might have. Line graphs also tend to express change and movement more clearly than a paragraph or a table of numbers. We can imagine that the line will keep going up or down according to the story the graph tells and often feel a sense of urgency to do something to make the graph move the way we want. Think how immediate-and motivating-the message is in the graphs used by Weight Watchers to depict weekly body weight. If we're trying to lose ten pounds, we want to see that line graph dropping week by week! And what property owner isn't pleased by an ascending graph of home values? Graphs have the advantage of appearing to be a logical proof when they can instead be designed for emotional impact.
