Learning Outcome: The purpose of this assignment is for the student to demonstrate critical thinking skills, current theory integration, and clear written communication skills on the topic of nursing leadership/management. Each student is expected to select a recent article about health, critique the article, and discuss the relevance of the ideas to nursing leadership. The body of the paper will be at least five pages and no longer than six pages, excluding title page and references.
OPTION #1:
1. Select an article from a peer reviewed professional journal specifically on nursing leadership/management. Refer to the journals identified in the course packet (under Recommended Resources) to guide your search to a nursing journal with a leadership focus. Look for an article that has relevance for a leadership issue on the unit or agency where you are completing your preceptorship. The article must be current within the past year from the due date.
2. In the paper, provide a summary of the selected article. This summary should be no longer than one page highlighting the main ideas, arguments, and/or recommendations for application for nursing leadership. Ensure your summary of the article is clear, concise, accurate and logical.
3. Examine the strengths and limitations in the article and include this brief analysis following your summary of the article (use CT resource to guide this critique).
4. To highlight the relevance for a nursing leader/ manager of the ideas in the selected article, describe a current nursing leadershipissue for the agency where you are completing your preceptorship. How might the ideas inform a nurse manager's actions to address the issue? Describe the situation without any breach of confidentiality. Aim to be solution oriented not overly critical of others' practice. Consider the course topics and mental health trends to ensure the selected issue has an appropriate leadership focus.
5. To support your discussion on the leadership issue, integrate relevant course concepts from the textbook. To strengthen your analysis, integrate resources from the broader context such as the CRPNBC, BC Ministry of Health, or Mental Health Commission of Canada. Explore the specific websites for relevant documents or position papers. This is an opportunity to demonstrate theory integration about nursing leadership in the Canadian or provincial context.
6. Include introduction and conclusion paragraphs.
