In this section of the course we examined the rise of sporting recreation and culture in late nineteenth and early twentieth century America. Much of this development took place in the emerging urban metropolises of the American Northeast and Midwest, where modern industry and a growing population combined to influence a move towards newer and more expanded consumerism. The rise of baseball as the American national pastime, the rise of college football as a "proper" activitiy for proper young men about to embark on their adult lives and responsibilities, and the emergence of public beaches and pools where bodies of every background could be seen and judged bring together the desire of Americans for modern leisure activities and the contrasting censorship these desires faced.
