HBP Simulation and Debrief Assignment
Instructions
The objective of this simulation is for you to experience how data from various aspects of a business can lead to informed decision-making. You will learn how your forecast of demand for a product or service influences other areas of the business, and that analytics and decision-making are iterative processes. The simulation offers quick feedback on decisions and the financial consequences of decision-making.
An important aspect of the analytics simulation experience is the debriefing. The instructor has online access to the results of your simulation exercise and will base your grade on both your simulation and your answers in the debrief assignment.
Your Role in the Simulation
In order to make this learning experience as rewarding as possible, you should:
- Take a moment to internalize that you "are the brand manager" in this simulation.
- Spend a few minutes observing the dashboard. Reflect upon what the numbers mean. How were they calculated? Where did the data come from?
What Needs to Be Completed?
You will need to complete the following while you go through the simulation:
- Analyze the dashboard and reflect upon the following metrics:
o Market share
o Profitability
o Competitor pricing
o Demand by geographic region
- Examine the reports and change the demographic filters to break down data segments by income, ethnicity, household size, region, and age.
- After you have reviewed all screens and reports, you will develop your strategy by forecasting:
o Demand
o Production level
o Pricing
o Positioning
o Promotional spending
o Communication activities
- You will then review your results and make three rounds of decisions based on your analysis and the resulting performance in previous years.
Debrief Questions
- Briefly describe the steps you took when running the K-W Blue simulation (200 words or less).
- Describe the effort you put into exploring past data regarding Blue's performance?
- What filters made you change your decisions?
- What was your overall strategy to turn around Blue's performance in the marketplace?
- What lessons, positive or negative, can you draw about the use of this type of analytics in decision making?
