You are a Registered Nurse working in the surgical ward of your local hospital.
You are looking after a 68-year-old female, 'Mary Poulas', who is Day 1 post-op following a left Total Hip Replacement.
She is a retired bank manager who is spending her retirement travelling the world. Her husband passed away 2 years ago, she has three children and 7 grandchildren who are spread out over Australia, with one granddaughter living in her house. She has a past medical history of mild hypertension and osteoporosis, otherwise she is fit and healthy.
She is currently ordered: Oxycodone (OxyNorm) 10mg 6th hourly and Paracetamol 1000mg 6th hourly. She expresses concern to you about the risk of dependence of opioids.
She is on a 'clinical pathway' and will be discharged on Day 3. The medical team have seen her, and she will be discharged on Oxycodone (OxyContin) Modified Release 10mg twice a day and Paracetamol 1000mg 6th hourly, this will be reviewed by her General Practitioner (GP) 7 days after discharge from hospital.
