This article examines the issue of legalizing physician assisted suiczde in the state of Washington. On 4 Nov. 1991, Washington residents voted on Initiative 119, thus becoming the first state in the US to try to legalize euthanasia. (The initiative, as it turns out, was narrowly defeated.) Initiative 119 would have permitted mentally competent patients with less than 6 months to live - something which two doctors would have had to certify - to request assisted suicide.
