Determinants of health and wellbeing in NZ
Learning Outcome 1: Students will be able to examine the health status of population groups in New Zealand in terms of mortality rates and morbidity statistics
Learning Outcome 2: Students will be able to identify and analyse determinants of health that contribute to the health status of population groups in New Zealand.
Learning Outcome 3: Students will be able to examine health status and determinants of health and their relationship to health inequalities of population groups in New Zealand
Key elements
a) Health Status may include but not limited to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, teenage suicide, infectious disease, injury, infant mortality, mental health issues
b) Population groups may include but are not limited to - Maori, non•Maori, Pacific people, NZ European, refugees, youth, elderly, rural
c) Health determinants may include but not limited to income, poverty, employment and occupation, education, housing, culture and ethnicity, social cohesion, behavioural patterns (smoking, alcohol, diet, exercise), age, gender, access to health care services, sense of control over life circumstances
d) Health inequalities may include but are not restricted to ethnic gaps in life expectancy, mortality rates for Maori and Pasifika peoples, mortality rates for different income earners, child poverty
e) Health inequities are avoidable inequalities in health between groups of people.
Task 1: (Word limit 1000-1200 words)
1.1 Identify any two (2) health indicators to measure health status.
1.2 Describe any two (2) health conditions significantly affecting wellbeing in Aotearoa.
1.3 Research health statistics for each of the two health conditions in Aotearoa
1.4 Identify any two (2) population groups significantly affected by each of the health conditions in Aotearoa
Task 2: (Word limit 1500-1800 words)
2.1 Research four (4) determinants of health for each of the two health conditions (selected in Task 1.2) in the New Zealand context
2.2 Analyse the four (4) determinants of health for the selected health conditions in the population groups in Aotearoa/New Zealand
Task 3: (Word limit 1200-1500 words)
3.1 Discuss the health inequities of any two (2) population groups in Aotearoa/New Zealand
3.2 Draw conclusions on the relationship between the health inequities and determinants of health for each of the two (2) population groups.
