Summary:
This chapter examines the ethical rationales for punishment. Today, our punishments primarily consist of imprisonment or some form of restricted liberty, such as probation or parole. The death penalty continues to be legal in 33 states; however, the controversy surrounding it continues as well. Formal ethics for those who work in corrections come from their professional organizations. Common to all the codes is adherence to the law, respect for persons, and maintaining objectivity and professional standards of competence.
Summary:
In this and the next chapter, the focus is on correctional professionals and the ethical issues they face in institutional and community settings. The difficult decisions for correctional officers arise from the personal relationships that develop with inmates, the trust that is sometimes betrayed, the favors that seem harmless, and the coercive environment that makes violence normal and caring abnormal.
Summary:
This chapter examines various forms of misconduct by correctional professionals. Suggestions to reduce misconduct include ethics training and improving management. Restorative justice principles may help to improve the sense of mission and commitment to ethical behavior by correctional workers.
