Scenario:
Setting: Divine Infant Catholic School
The school is an elementary school with approximately 300 students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6.
All students are fully integrated into regular classrooms. Those students requiring more intensive academic assistance are removed from the classroom for short periods and provided one-to-one or small-group instruction by another teacher or a CYW.
The school is in a mostly middle-class neighbourhood; however, many low-income families are also in the area.
The school does have a breakfast club program available every day.
The school playground has a large grassy area with a baseball diamond and play structure. There is also a paved area on the playground that has 2 basketball nets and painted markings to play four-square.
At recess, the primary and junior students are required to play in different areas.
The Grade 6 class is a typical class. The desks are set up in rows facing the front blackboard. The walls are decorated with academic posters and student work (artwork and assignments).
Your CYW Role:
As a second-year CYW placement student, you are at the school three days per week (Wednesday to Friday) for the full day.
You have been assigned to assist in the grade 6 class. There are 30 students in this class, and 5 have Individual Education Plans. All five of the students have learning disabilities, and three of the students also have behavioural difficulties. Other students in the class exhibit behavioural problems but do not have Individual Education Plans.
Generally, you help out in the class by assisting students with academics at their desks or extra activities around the class.
Once a day, you take a small group of students to the library for about 40 minutes to provide extra academic assistance - usually in math or English.
The teacher in the grade 6 class has been at this school for five years but has been teaching for 10 years. This is her first year teaching a grade 6 class, although she has taught many of these students in an earlier grade. This is the first time this teacher has had a CYW placement student in her class. Although unsure of what a CYW does, she is open to using your skills differently.
Client Information:
Robert is the oldest student in the class, one year older than the other students due to having completed an earlier grade twice. Robert has an Individual Education Plan for a learning disability and behavioural difficulties.
He has been diagnosed with ADHD and has difficulty sitting at his desk for more than 20 minutes.
Due to his behavioural difficulties, he struggles with academics and tends to act out when frustrated with the work provided.
Often frustrated, he can become verbally aggressive, yelling and swearing at other students and adults. This behaviour has resulted in difficulty making friends. Most students are afraid of Robert due to the verbal aggression displayed, which often includes threats of harm to the other students.
You have been working with Robert for approximately 2 months and have been able to develop a relationship with Robert. During your one-to-one times in the library, you often talk about what's happening in his life and at school.
