To assess your organization's immediate industry, utilize Porter's 5 forces.

A. Who are the parties involved in each of the 5 forces?

B. Evaluate the competitive pressure stemming from each of the 5 forces and classify the competitive pressures as Strong. Moderate, or Weak

I. Identify a minimum of six key external opportunities that exist for your organization based on your analysis of the PESTEL factors and Porter's 5 Forces.

A. Concisely describe each opportunity and provide a paragraph or two that summarizes the key facts and your rationalization as to why your team believes this factor(s) represents an opportunity for your organization.

a. Be sure to take detailed notes about where you got the information and your rationalization.

II. Identify a minimum of six key external threats that exist for your organization based on your analysis of the PESTEL factors and Porter's 5 Forces.

A. Concisely describe each Threat and provide a paragraph or two that summarizes the key facts and your rationalization as to why your team believes this factor(s) represents a threat to your organization.

a. Be sure to take detailed notes about where you got the information and your rationalization.

III. Develop an External Factor Evaluation Matrix based on your identified opportunities and threats.

IV. Develop a Competitive Profile Matrix (CPM)

A. Must include at least 8 Critical Success Factors

B. Must include at least 2 competitors (in addition to YOUR organization)

Note - this homework is asking you to explore the internal functioning of your organization. From your outside perspective, this will be very difficult. Utilize all available resources to try to identify what differentiates your organization from its competitors.

For this homework you and your team are required to:

I. Identify and map out the organizational structure (organizational chart) of your company.

II. Examine the current financial position of your organization (*depending on information availability, this step might not be possible for you to complete).

A. Compile the most current financial statements for your organization.

b. Income statement
c. Statement of cash flows

B. Select one financial ratio from each of the following ratio categories. Compute and interpret your selected financial ratio's for three distinct time periods (current, one year ago, and three years ago). Refer to the ratio cheat

a. Liquidity ratios
b. Leverage ratios
c. Activity ratios
d. Profitability ratios/measures

III. Identify the core functional areas of your organization (management/marketing/production & operations/R&D/information systems/finance/accounting, etc...)

IV. Explore each of these functional areas for differentiating factors (this will be very difficult...do your best).

A. Look through the list of questions (listed below) regarding performance in each of these functional areas and work to identify:

a. What are they doing exceptionally well (strengths)?
b. What are they struggling with (weaknesses)?

V. Based on your findings from all of the analysis outlined above, construct a list of internal strengths and weaknesses for your organization.

A. Identify a minimum of 6 internal strengths

a. Concisely describe each Strength and provide a paragraph or two that summarizes the key facts and your rationalization as to why your team believes each factor represents a strength to your organization.

B. Identify a minimum of 6 internal weaknesses

a. Concisely describe each Weakness and provide a paragraph or two that summarizes the key facts and your rationalization as to why your team believes each factor represents a weakness to your organization.

VI. Develop an Internal Factor Evaluation Matrix based on your identified strengths and weaknesses.
