Dynamics within individual family systems may complicate working with families in a substance abuse counseling setting. Recognizing the roles within a family structure and knowing how to address challenges related to them will help the overall effectiveness of substance abuse treatment or intervention.

In this Discussion, you will examine the common roles that are exhibited in families and consider the challenges that they may present for the treatment of substance abuse and/or addiction.
