We will examine specific aspects of toxicology in environmental health; risk assessment, risk management, hazard identification; pests and vectors, and pest control.

Our textbook readings will acquaint you with the topics of toxic substances, and pest and pesticides.

The influence of toxic substances is a significant issue for environmental health. As an example, the introduction of toxic materials into drinking water as evidenced by Benzene and other chemicals that were found in water wells at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina in 1985; Benzene contamination of well water in Texas in 1987 and 1992; and the recent, 2015 Flint, Michigan water contamination incident, wherein lead polluted the municipal water used by households in that community.

There also has been instances where hastily discarded solvents and other toxic chemicals have endangered groundwater and polluted public beaches.

And, instances where the illegal application of pesticides such as those containing methyl bromide, which is banned from indoor-use due to their acute toxicity, has threatened the health and well-being of individuals.

This was equally evidenced in a 2015 incident in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where a fumigation treatment of the restricted-use pesticide containing methyl bromide, was employed in a condominium resort and subsequently caused grave neurological injury to and hospitalization of, an entire family.
