Assessment Task No 1 (Workshop Participation)
Task description: Active participation in the Workshop
Students are required to satisfactorily complete workshop exercises, tutorial case studies and give evidence of being prepared for classes by actively contributing to class discussions.
Criteria used to grade this task:
1. Investigate the principles, theoretical application and practical implication of accommodation operations, resource management and contemporary challenges supported by personal context and/or of work completed in class.
2. Present ideas in a professional manner to inform others.
Assessment Task No 2 (Roleplay Activity)
Task Description: Maximum of 10-15-minute Role Play and submit a step-by- step check-in and check-out procedure dialogues.
This task will give the students the opportunity to be as a Front Office Manager working for a hotel and learn the Front Office Job Role tasks of Check-in and Check-out procedures, front and back-of-house tasks involved at the reception desk of a hotel. Alternatively, students can use this Task as a learning experience to support them in the real world of working.
Student Analysis (200-word limit). Students will be required to include written analysis of their role play activity (dialogues) in a step-by-step procedure.
Criteria used to grade this task:
1. Demonstrate professionalism, communication skills, (dialogue), etiquette, process flow chart; back end operations and accommodation management queries.
2. Investigate the principles, theoretical application and practical implication of Guest check-in and check-out process.
3. Explain the hotel target market, management of hotel operations, facilities and service culture impact on the hotel check-in and check-out.
4. Present ideas in a professional manner to inform others about the holistic approach of hotel check-in and check-out.
Assessment Task No 3 A (Poster Presentation)
Task Description: This assessment requires a poster presentation of the comparative analysis of two different star category hotels. Students are required to form in pairs in week 4 (during tutorial). This assessment task requires students to critically analyse two different star category hotels and their accommodation facilities after the visit of those.
This task involves students to choose “TWO DIFFERENT STAR CATEGORY HOTELS” (4 or 5-star Hotel/ 4- or 3-star Hotel) and the hotels Comparative Analysis. Students will be given time to do field work (Lecturer to notify students after Week-4 of Field Work time). As evidence, students to provide a proof of their visit in the form of a picture during the visit to the hotel
Task Requirements:
Comparative analysis of two different star category hotels, their operational processes and practices in relation to resource and performance management and technology. Key areas of analysis include accommodation management theories, hotel reservations, group booking and relevant operational processes and performance practices.
In the groups, you will be expected to cover points, such as the followings (not limited to). Students to follow the below Criteria for their presentation-
• Introduction of both hotels;
• Accommodation background information (Hotel, resort, five-star, four-star, AIR BNB etc., chain hotel or standalone hotel);
• Accommodation organisation’s information (e.g., established year, the number of rooms, market profile, ownership, occupancy rate, any awards, etc.);
• Forbes Ratings/TripAdvisor ranking/rating (e.g., how many “excellent” and “very good” and how many “terrible” the hotel received);
• Hotel reservation systems, booking procedures and room division.
• Creative ideas of the hotels which attracts the patrons.
• Conclusion/Summary.
Criteria used to grade this task:
1. Demonstrate the hotels background information with relevant information.
2. Provide adequate information about the hotels market profile, ownership, occupancy rate, number of rooms and star ratings.
3. Critically analyse and present solutions to contemporary challenges in the accommodation sector.
4. Appraise the impact of the integrated and holistic approach that technology can have on the successful operations and sustainability of the hospitality organisation.
5. Creative ideas to showcase better accommodation practices carried out to attract the customers.
Assessment Task No 3 B- Group Report
Task description: This task involves students to compile a Group Report on the comparative analysis of the two different star category hotels which they have visited.
Task Length: 2000-2500 Word Limit
Task Requirements:
Students are required to demonstrate their capacity to critically think about contemporary challenges within the accommodation sector and provide solutions using judgment, creativity /innovation and logic to improve the business performance.
Students will be required to compile a report based on the below from the subject learning outcomes
A. What are the components of Hotel Accommodation Management both the front and back of house areas
B. Key trends in Hotel Accommodation Management- AIRBNB/Technology/Franchising
C. Strategies to improve the business performance- Revenue Management/Group Reservation Team etc.
D. Identify the different departments in the hotels and their relationship with accommodation sector
E. Management issues and contemporary challenges in the global accommodation sector
F. Solutions or Recommendations
Criteria used to grade this task:
1. Provide information about the components of hotel accommodation operations both the front and back of house.
2. Explain the impact of key trends in accommodation sector on the hotels success and profitability.
3. Assess the internal and external factors influencing the accommodation operations.
4. Explain the interdepartmental relations and their influence on the performance of the accommodation sector of the hotels.
5. Critically analyse and present solutions to management issues and contemporary challenges in the global accommodation sector.
