Assignment Goal: In this course, students are expected to summarize, differentiate, and judge the efficacy of major scientific concepts and theories that sociologists use to examine sociological dynamics undergirding the interconnection between individual personal troubles and public issues associated with modernity and its attendant patterns of social stability and change.
Specifically, the purpose of the essay is to answer two questions. First, how did one of the sociological theorists or branches of sociological theory covered in weeks 7 to 10 in class build on the ideas of Marx and Weber? Second, how did one of the sociological theorists or branches of sociological theory covered in weeks 7 to 10 in class make their own novel contribution to sociological theory?
Suggested Essay Outline: Successful papers will include thoughtful commentary and analysis in the following suggested outline:
Introduction: 1-page long section that clearly states the two objectives of the paper and your thesis statement. Your thesis statement should be about 3-4 sentences long and summarize the paper's argument about (1) how one of the sociological theorists or branches of sociological theory covered in weeks 7 to 10 in class build on the ideas of Marx and Weber, and (2) how one of the sociological theorists or branches of sociological theory covered in weeks 7 to 10 in class made their own novel contribution to sociological theory.
Body: at least 5 pages long, beginning with heading of "Extending the Core Foundations" in bold print. At least 2.5 pages of this section should discuss how one of the sociological theorists or branches of sociological theory covered in weeks 7 to 10 built on the ideas of Marx and Weber. In at least 2.5 pages of the remaining body section, it should discuss how one of the sociological theorists or branches of sociological theory covered in weeks 7 to 10 in class made their own novel contribution to sociological theory.
References: This final section should start with a heading that says, "References," in bold print. This section should be on 1 (or more) separate page(s) from the text and include all the sources cited in the paper. Failure to follow the ASA style guide (pgs. 20-24 & 33-37) for citing your sources in the text and for properly including them in your reference section may result in academic penalties for plagiarism and academic dishonesty as stated in the course syllabus.
