The goal of this assignment is to examine our own use of patronizing language and elderspeak. In addition to readings in your textbook, watch the video regarding elderspeak

  • Identify a public place to observe intergenerational interactions (i.e., older/younger adults and youth). Places may include (but are not limited to) a restaurant, the mall, a clinic, a bank, a grocery or other retail store, or a park.
  • Spend a minimum of one (1) hour observing the interactions of fellow patrons.
  • Listen for use of elderspeak by employees and customers and document your findings.
  • Observe the non-verbal communication by all involved parties. Note the differences/similarities in verbal and non-verbal communications.
  • Compile your findings to share in this week's discussion board post.
  • Provide examples of elderspeak/patronizing language you observed.
  • Relate the observations with the video above and other course materials.
  • Describe how you can address elderspeak/patronizing language in your professional and personal communications. Provide specific examples of how you intend on using this information and the observations you made. How might you be a change-agent when it comes to society's use of elderspeak and other patronizing language(verbal/non-verbal)?
