KM STRATEGY
The task requires you to develop a knowledge management strategy for (Tesla).
GENERAL GUIDELINES
- It is envisaged that this assessment task will result in the development of a professional KM strategy.
- The word limit for this task is 3000 words (including in-text references, tables, figures, and appendices but excluding the reference list).
- You can scope the assignment if necessary, for example, focus on one department, team, store or product line.
SUGGESTED STRUCTURE
The following is designed to provide general guidance as to the structure of the KM strategy. However, this is a suggestion only and by no means should limit your creativity when constructing your own KM strategy:
1. Introduction and background This should include a brief explanation of the overall vision, objectives, size, industry, location, the organization's structure (logical and physical) and its impact on KM.
2. Overview of approach and methods This should explain the approach and methods used in developing the strategy (Zack's approach) and the methods of data collection (e.g. interviews or secondary sources). What limitations (if any) are inherent in your chosen method?. This section really only needs to be 2-3 paragraphs long.
3. Strategic and Knowledge Gap Analysis
(current vs. desired state)
Operational infrastructure Focus on structure (logical and physical), governance, KM instruments and K-based processes (e.g. creation, organisation, capture, sharing, application). You could explore what existing KM instruments (e.g. rewards, recognition) are used (if any) and how effective are they (or
not).
Technological infrastructure Focus on the content management, collaboration and knowledge transfer perspectives. Provide a critical analysis of the effectiveness of existing information technologies. Elaborate on what works well and what does not. What else is needed from a technology perspective to help the business reach its goals (i.e. are there any ‘gaps' here that could be addressed as part of the KM roadmap/recommendations).
Cultural infrastructure Assess the type of culture at the organization, identify any sub-cultures, and examine issues for a knowledge-friendly culture.
4. KM Recommendations and/or KM Roadmap
Operational infrastructure
Technological infrastructure
Cultural infrastructure Be sure it is clear which recommendations link back to which gaps - i.e. how will implementing these recommendations close these gaps in order to meet the strategic objectives of the organization?. You could do this by labelling the various gaps, for example, "Recommend X, in order to address gaps Y and Z". Use references to support your ideas. Be sure to explain not only WHAT needs to be done but HOW it might be done. You may explain what challenges might Tesla face in implementing your recommendations and how might these be addressed?.
