Assignment 2
or this week's discussion, the class will focus on the Allied plans to end the war. In January 1943, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill met in the city of Casablanca in Morocco. Although Joseph Stalin was invited, he was unable to attend the conference. At the conference, the two leaders decided to concentrate their efforts against Germany and to increase shipments of supplies to the Soviet Union. On the last day of the conference, it was decided that the only way to ensure postwar peace was to adopt a policy of unconditional surrender.
Instructions:
For this discussion, familiarize yourself with the events in the Pacific Theater in World War II, including Japanese resistance in Okinawa, kamikaze attacks on U.S. ships, the Great Tokyo Air Raid, projections of massive casualties if Japan were directly invaded, the refusal of the Japanese government to an unconditional surrender, the Soviet Union's declaration of war on Japan, and the decision to use atomic weapons against Japan. Then, post a response either rebutting or supporting the following statement. Provide detailed facts to support your opinion.
"The United States was justified in its decision to drop atomic bombs on Japan." Last, read the posts made by other students, choose two posts which interest you and write a response expressing your opinion/viewpoint regarding their post.
Assignment 3
Goal:
Create 2 Mini-Posters each featuring an influential person during WWII. One poster must feature a person you consider to be a Hero (for example a civilian who helped save some of the Jewish population from execution, or an outstanding military leader, etc.) The second mini-poster must feature a person who you believe to be a Villain during WWII (for example, military leaders, doctors, civilians who profited from the war, etc.)
Instructions:
Use the internet or various library resources to research important figures during World War II. Select, a Hero and a Villain on which to focus. Then, create 2 mini-posters.
For each poster, provide at least one image with a caption that features your person and include detailed evidence to support your Hero or Villain claim. Give your posters a creative title. Last, include what happened to your hero or villain after WWII. For example, did they receive any commendations for their actions or were they penalized for their actions during the war. Be creative with your mini-posters!
Document your sources/URL'S used on a separate word document.
Please read the information under the sample project below for more information.
