Question: A Literature Research Essay is an essay that closely examines a literary text, while providing historical, cultural, and biographical contexts.
The purpose of a literature research essay is to examine how these various contexts influence the work itself. For this assignment, you will select either a short story or poem from the assigned readings and conduct further research to find biographical information about the author, the time period it was written, and the culture that influenced it. For example if you were writing about "The Great Gatsby" , you would research what was going on during that time period (the 1920''s), the culture (Jazz, Prohibition, Roaring Twenties, Pre-Great Depression), as well as F. Scott Fitzgerald''s life.
In addition, the essay should also analyze the story or poem you selected. Your argument should show the relationship between these three contexts and their story; in other words, your essay should demonstrate how these influence the story or poem you choose. In order to do that, you should first identify the overall theme of the story or poem and then show how theme was shaped by the history, culture , and life of the author. Your thesis should be "an original, debatable interpretive claim about the literary text which the body of the essay supports and develops by presenting and analyzing evidence from the text" (Mays 1992).
There is a sample research essay on page 1992 of your Norton Intro to Literature book which I urge you all to read, this way you get an idea of what is expected from your essays. Remember that a literature research essay-like an analysis essay -goes beyond simply summarizing the text. Once you formulate your interpretation, you must use evidence from the text and outside sources and format your essay according to MLA style.
