Foundations of Human Resource Management is an introductory approach to manage human resources of an organisation. Human resource management (HRM,) is the management of an organization's workforce, or human resources. It is responsible for the attraction, selection, training, assessment, and rewarding of employees, while also overseeing organizational leadership and culture, and ensuring compliance with employment and labor laws. HR is a product of the human relations movement of the early 20th century, when researchers began documenting ways of creating business value through the strategic management of the workforce. The function was initially dominated by transactional work such as payroll and benefits administration, but due to globalization, company consolidation, technological advancement, and further research, HR now focuses on strategic initiatives like mergers and acquisitions, talent management, succession planning, industrial and labor relations, and diversity and inclusion.

This subject introduces students to the fundamentals of HRM and its relevance to twenty first century business operations. It begins with a general introduction to human behaviour in the workplace and discusses the evolution of and trends in HRM, particularly Strategic HRM. The
main aims of the subject are to:

• Provide the theoretical knowledge and provide some practical approaches to explain the management of human resources in organisations
• Offer a framework for developing effective HRM strategies within organisations
• Provide an insight into the role and nature of relationships that exist within organisations and the impact of the external environment on how these relationships are managed.

• Communicate ideas, intentions and outcomes clearly to a variety of audiences.
• Contribute to decisions within diverse political, economic, environmental and social contexts
• Work collaboratively.
• Contribute to the management of business in contemporary organisations.
