Introduction: Regarding the January 6 insurrection at the U. S. Capitol, Jack Katz, PhD (Media Education Foundation scholar on gender, race, and violence) stated: In the spring of 2021, the University of Chicago did a study that examined the demographic breakdown of the people arrested and charged with crimes at the Capitol on January 6. One of its major findings was that 93% were white, and 86% were men. Racial grievance - and outright white supremacist belief - is obviously a huge underlying factor in the growing militancy on the right. The racial politics of January 6 clearly needs to be analyzed and understood but the focus on race has rendered invisible the role of gender. Trumpist populism is in many ways a white male identity movement (Source: Online Interview January 6, 2022).

After watching the Man Card, you are to make an initial post in which you share three insights from the film that convinced you that we should look at the role of masculinity/manhood when examining gender and power at both the interpersonal and societal level. Link these insights to a personal example. This example could be a personal experience, a policy that reinforces ideas of traditional gender roles/manhood (think of the many anti-transgender laws that are being passed at the state level), or even a political campaign strategy that insinuates the importance of "being a man."
