Examine some of the anxieties and aspirations of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) as espoused in the Port Huron Statement. What kinds of concerns did students like Tom Hayden (the author) have about the direction of America in the early 1960s? What kinds of aims did SDS have for addressing these concerns? Based on this document, how do you think the ideals of SDS and the "New Left" influenced the student movement of the 1960s, including its approach to issues like civil rights, the Cold War, and the Vietnam War (which escalated in the years after the Port Huron Statement was issued).
