The newspaper coverage paper offers an opportunity to investigate how American reporters tried to understand and report what Nazi Germany and its allies were doing to the Jews. Most Americans got information about the world from reading newspapers or watching news reel footage in theaters. By looking at the news coverage, we can see what Americans knew and how the story was being understood at the time.

Assignment: You will examine and analyze an aspect of the coverage of the Nazis and/or the Holocaust in American newspapers between 1933 and 1945. The paper should not simply summarize this coverage but must instead make an argument about the coverage. Take a look at the Lipstadt reading "Against Belief" (it's on Canvas). It comes from her book, Beyond Belief, which examines American press coverage of the Holocaust. It should give you some context for how to think about these issues.
