Assignment:

Examine a criminogenic environment. Use incentive analysis to theorize as to why this environment breeds abusive behavior. Select an industry or organization that one might consider corrupt, and research the incentives (economic or otherwise) that may contribute to this corruption.

You should integrate ideas we have discussed throughout this semester like monopoly/oligopoly, regulatory capture, systemic corruption and propaganda. The following questions can help guide your paper:

  • What are the harmful effects of the operations of this industry?
  • Are harmful behaviors standard practice in this industry or organization? If so, what incentives are driving people to commit these harmful acts?
  • Often, incentive analysis is a sort of cost-benefit analysis. Does this apply to your industry? What are the costs of these harmful acts? What are the benefits? How could this balance be shifted?
