The film Mardi Gras: Made In China, is an examination of the cultural and economic globalization that follows the life-cycle of Mardi Gras beads from a small factory in Fuzhou, China, to Mardi Gras in New Orleans, and to art galleries in New York City.

Please provide a brief essay (4-5 pages) that explores the ways in which families, economic systems and state authority, as discussed in chapters 14 and 15, shape the lives of those individuals depicted in the film. In what ways can the theories discussed in the textbook be used to understand the film? Make sure to address the following questions:

  1. Compare and contrast, the role that family plays in the lives of both the Chinese workers and the US community. How does family status, expectations and roles for the two groups shape their experiences?
  2. Explore economic conditions for the two groups. How are the similar and different, and how does capitalism and globalization play a role?
  3. Consider the differences in both nations, as they are related to authority and the state? What kinds of power are demonstrated by the two different nation-states.
  4. Finally, discuss the relationship between the two nations? Who benefits and who is harmed by the relationship?
