Since at least 1940, evolutionary biologists have fretted that modern life has relaxed selection against deleterious alleles in developed human societies, with potentially dire consequences for the human race.

a) Offer a critique of that argument. In particular, explain what the very-long-term consequences would be.

b) An alternative hypothesis is that the recent orders-of-magnitude increase in human population size will provide a "genetic tune-up" for the human population. This is a decidedly minority opinion. Offer a critique of that argument, and explain whether you find the "dire consequences" or "genetic tune-up" to be more convincing.
