ASSIGNMENT TASK:
For a historic building of your choice (agreed with the course tutor), that may or may not be currently included on the record of protected structures:
Carry out desk top research into the origins and historical development of the building focusing on the major changes, uses, adaptations and extensions (if any) and present a detailed report outlining your findings. The report should include a description of the anticipated construction methods for a building of this type and era.
You may wish to note the evolution of the wider setting of the building (ie: significant changes to the surrounding rural / urban environment) and how this has in turn influenced the development of the building. The "setting" is the wider landscape in which the building sits, ie: the townland, village or street.
You are not required to gain access to the building, but may do so if safe access is available, you are compliant with government advice regarding the prevailing COVID 19 restrictions at the time and you have obtained the necessary permissions from the property owner / occupiers.
Where internal access is either unsafe or unavailable, reasonable assumptions can be made for the purposes of the report. However, these assumptions shall be based on your research and knowledge of the building and the anticipated construction methods for a building of this type and era.
You should choose your building carefully to ensure relevant sources of historical information are available and the building is of sufficient age, interest and merit to warrant study. It is advisable you carry out some preliminary research prior to choosing your building, for example to establish it has changed, evolved or been altered in some way over time.
The report must be supplemented by relevant images and extracts (fully referenced).
