The selective forces depend on the context experienced by a population. For example: sickle cell anaemia (HSHS) in the context of people in contact with malaria-affected mosquitoes.

a) Explain how natural selection affects the evolution of haemoglobin diseases such as sickle cell anaemia in humans, and how and why the selective pressures differ between separate human populations.

b) For your answer to part a, which are examples of disruptive, stabilizing or directional selection?

c) Malaria is absent in human populations living in regions of the modern world. Explain why the HS allele may NOT be lost in such populations.
