The purpose of this oral presentation is persuasion, or in other terms, to convince the audience that the solution to a problem is the best solution or policy. You are presenting the same ideas and evidence that you will be discussing in your research paper; you are simply doing so in another genre (speech) and to a wider audience.

Specifications:

• How do you define the problem? How does your research define the problem?

• Evidence that the problem exists

• May include first-person evidence; however, the speech should focus on the research

• Research integration/connections

• What type of a pattern does your research (collectively) showcase? For instance:

o A series of events?
o Chronological timeline?
o Cause/effect relationships?

• Clear statement of the solution:
o What changes would you like to implement?
o What pieces of research support your views?
o Where are you developing your own solutions without identified support?
o Where does your research dovetail with your solutions?

Elements of persuasion:

o What evidence do you have to convince the audience that your solution is best?
o Consider:
? Logos: appeal to logic/reason
? Pathos: appeal to emotion
? Ethos: appeal to authority (use of your research)
