Evidence-based practice in middle school social work, specifically regarding suicide prevention, involves implementing interventions and strategies supported by empirical research. One evidence-based practice intervention for suicide prevention used in my site consists of the implementation of a universal mental health curriculum. The site supervisor collaborates with school counselors and teachers to deliver evidence-based programs like the Signs of Suicide (SOS) Prevention Program. This curriculum educates students about recognizing warning signs, seeking help, and promoting a supportive environment.
One way to improve the evidence-based practice regarding suicide prevention on my site is by ensuring that teachers and other personnel are equipped with the knowledge and skills to identify students at risk and connect them with appropriate resources. This approach aligns with research indicating that gatekeeper training enhances the school community's overall capacity to recognize and respond to signs of suicide risk, contributing to a safer and more supportive environment for middle school students. Unfortunately, I do not believe this training had been given to the staff in my district. However, the district had a parent workshop regarding suicide prevention, but not many parents went. I wonder if the lack of parent participation was due to a topic that is still taboo in the Hispanic community where the district is located.
