Question

Early motor program theories postulated that every task required a separate motor program. A new program was required to catch a tennis ball versus a softball, or to throw a ball 10 feet (3 m) rather than 15 feet (4.5 m). If a new program was required for every variation of a movementan immense amount of space in memory would be needed for all the information. A theory of generalized motor programs was developed to address this issue. As long as a new coordination pattern was not required to perform a motor skill, it could be controlled by the same generalized motor program. To test this, try the following variations of throwing a small ball at a target. For a through d the goal is to throw for accuracyfor e, the goal is to throw as hard as you can.
