Group Report: HRM strategy in practice

Group Report - Evaluating the Strategic Role of Human Resources in modern organisations - MAXIMUM of 3,000 words (see appendices 2-3). This assignment is to be completed in the same group you have been allocated to for the Group Debate.

GROUP REPORT SCENARIO

You are a specialised advising team from the highly successful Human Resource Consultancy Company known as "On-Target Consulting". An Australian based mining company, Blue Steel, is interested in knowing more about the competitiveadvantages that can derived from human capital and Human Resource strategies.

The National HR Manager of Blue Steel, Mr Granite has approached you for advice on a number of issues. In particular, he would like information on the following:

1. Critically evaluate the advantages and disadvantages that well developed Human Resource Systems (HRM) can present to modern firms like Blue Steel

2. Using the work of Alan Fox discussed in lectures, explain to Mr Granite how the employment relationship can be conceptualized.

3. How can the Strategic Negotiations Framework discussed in lectures help Mr. Granite decide how to manage employment relations at Blue Steel? Which strategy from this model do you think Mr Granite should adopt. Why?

4. Mr. Granite would like to know the impact on HRM practices that the Fair Work Act (2009) (Cth) is producing. In particular he would like to know if the Act is encouraging greater collaboration between employers and workers or whether it is actually providing employers with more control. In your answer, consider the provisions of the Act and legal cases discussed in lectures.

Mr Granite is a seasoned Human Resource practitioner who is acutely aware of the important role that academic material plays in creating convincing arguments. The CEO of On-Target Consulting, a fellow named Troy, has made it known that any report that merely summarizes literature rather than engaging in a process of critical evaluation will NOT be looked upon favourably when these reports are marked!
