Case Study

You are currently working as a community health nurse and you have partnered with the local healthcare institution and medical groups to create interventions in your local community to decrease the obesity rate. Your community has a population of 110,000 and the population is predominantly Mexican American and African American and there is a high poverty rate.

There are health courses in the schools, but the courses do not currently cover any nutritional information and most members of the community do not seem concerned with their weight and nutrition. There has been 125 new cases of Type 2 diabetes in adolescents in the schools and 935 ongoing cases of type 2 diabetes in adolescents in the community. Most of these adolescents are overweight or obese.

Most of the materials reviewed do not address the cultural needs of the community. Many of the Spanish language materials are at the eleventh grade level and audiovisual materials are not pertinent to the current population.

1. Describe how you would approach evaluating the community knowledge about healthy eating and healthy weight.
2. Assess how you would determine cultural needs of the community and how you would assure culturally competent health promotion.
3. Determine how the schools could assist in meeting the health promotion needs of the community.
4. Explain what health promotion materials you would use and how you would assess their efficacy.
5. Calculate the incidence and prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes in the adolescents in this community. Explain how this information could be useful in educating the community.
