Question: Dr. Bjxrn Myrvoldsen, a criminologist at Junction City College (a private liberal arts college in Oregon), recently published an article in which he proposes that listening to Norwegian death metal, a sub-genre of heavy metal music, causes crime. To test his theory, Dr. Myrvoldsen prepared a questionnaire that included general questions about past criminal activity as well as specific questions about music listening habits such as "Have you ever listened to Norwegian death metal?" and "How often do you listen to Norwegian death metal?" Dr. Myrvoldsen administered the survey to inmates in a Norwegian prison and, for comparison, to his neighbors in Junction City and colleagues at the college. He found that the inmates who listened to Norwegian death metal were significantly more likely to have committed all types of crime than the non-inmate sample. He concluded that Norwegian death metal triggers a part of the brain that suppresses criminal tendencies in a process that he called "Norwegian Death Metal Syndrome (NDMS)." Evaluate the theory and the research on which Dr. Myrvoldsen bases his conclusion.
