1. Evaluate the work team context that evaluated the A7D brake--including Lawson, Warren, Vandivier, Sink, Line, and Gretzinger--as to team context, team composition, and team processes and states.
2. Would training have improved the ethical climate at BF Goodrich, or were the political incentives too powerful to overcome?
3. In The Social Dilemma, many of the commentators blame the profit motive and capitalism for the manipulative approach to marketing at Google, Facebook, and Twitter. They suggest that regulation and socialism will solve the ethical problems of deceptive and manipulative advertising tactics. In "The Aircraft Brake Scandal," government, the US Air Force, is the client. The Department of Defense, the US General Accounting Office (GAO) and the US Air Force regulate the conduct of the testing, corrupted by Sink, Line, Warren, and others at BF Goodrich. Would intensifying regulation or adopting a socialist economic system reduce, increase, or cause the degree of corruption to remain the same?
4. This case received national attention 50 years ago when it appeared in Harper's Magazine. Today, as we have been studying, the nature of organizations and work have shifted into gig arrangements, downsized and flattened organizations, reduced emphasis on hierarchy, and reduced centralization. In effect, organizations have become less hierarchical and socialistic than they were in the late 1960s. In this question I'm asking the opposite of what I ask in the prior question: Have the changes made by the gig economy such as greater flexibility and increased gig work reduced, increased, or caused the degree of politicization and corruption to remain the same?
5. The article begins with a recent grad, Searle Lawson's, assignment to test the A7D brake. If you were Lawson in your first job after college, would you have resigned when told to engage in falsification and fraud, or would you have done the economically optimal thing, which likely would have been to keep your head down and accept your fate? When you read the last paragraphs of the case, you'll notice that although Lawson was forced out, he landed on his feet at LTV Corp. Warren remained secure as a brake designer, while the chief perpetrators of the fraud, Line and Sink, were promoted. Vandivier, who had gone to the FBI, was forced to resign and change careers.
