Project Proposal: Financial Reporting

The purpose of the Final Project is to apply the concepts and techniques of the module to the analysis of real-world situations or problems. You are expected to use diverse sources of information and to carry out an original analysis rather than summarise or rehash existing work. You are also encouraged to use situations and data from your own experience where possible.

Your task for Week 6 is to prepare and hand in a Project Proposal that includes the nature of the project, the sources of information that you plan to use and the most important concepts and techniques to be applied. You should also identify the organisation selected for research, expectations prior to analysis and why you believe that the selected organisation will make a good case study subject. You will receive feedback on the Proposal from the Instructor in Week 7, which will give you time to make adjustments.

For this module, you are required to complete a course project that reveals mastery in the application of the financial reporting and analysis concepts emphasised in the course. This involves reporting on a specific organisation within an industry and describing the financial reporting and accounting practices relevant to the chosen firm. The Final Project should be a formal business report that provides a detailed analysis of the regulatory environment in which the selected company operates, its capital structure, tax system, financial reporting regulations and corporate governance structure. You will also be required to conduct a thorough financial analysis of the organisation.

For this project, you will select a company to research with regards to significant financial reporting and analysis issues. You should select an organisation for which financial information is readily available and address the following topics.

For this project, your tasks are as follows:

Identify the major elements and regulations that affect financial reporting for this organisation and how this may differ from organisations in other countries.

Analyse the selected organisation in regards to its capital structure and off balance sheet financing.

Evaluate the tax system and major regulations affecting the chosen organisation.

Analyse the organisation?s use and reporting of intangible assets and financial instruments.

Conduct a thorough financial statement analysis on the selected organisation.

Analyse the corporate governance structures of the chosen organisation.

Describe the organisation?s exposure to foreign currency exchange risk.

Your assignment for this week is to develop a Proposal for the Project, which should include the following information:

Nature of the project
Sources of information that you plan to use
Most important concepts and techniques to be applied
Organisation selected for research
Expectations prior to analysis

Why you believe that the selected organisation will make a good case study subject.
