Scenario - You work as part of a Health, Wellness and Safety Team at senior's residence in a suburb of Toronto. Most of the employees are female, culturally diverse and work full or part time as housekeepers, personal support workers and nurses. Employees work rotating shifts and experience a myriad of demands caring for vulnerable patients and their families. There is a strong safety culture and physical safety has always been prioritized. Employees are highly trained and competent when it comes to hazards such as biological and chemical agents, proper lifting and using personal protective equipment. However, over the past two years, there has been an increase in aggression and conflict between staff, patients and family members, as well as among staff members themselves. The number of harassment allegations and complaints has increased by 15% and morale is at an all-time low, which could impact resident safety.
