Political Theorist Leo Strauss Famously argued that Locke's Second Treatise on Government was really just a "sugar-coated" rehash of hobbes's Leviathan. Needless to say, this argument required unconventional interpretations of both authors. In order to evaluate the Straussian thesis that Hobbes was more liberal - and that Locke more authoritarian - than each is willing to openly acknowledge.

Compare the two authors (Hobbes and Locke) on the question of how far rightful freedom and legitimate authority extend (Under the Social contract, not in the state of nature).
