Assessment 1: Pre-placement evaluation

There are few work placement vacancies for students in different work placement organisations. In each placement, there are three stakeholders involved in the evaluation of placements and each have an important role to play.

The college/ University Host institutions/employers Placement students

In order to achieve high quality placements, where student learning is facilitated effectively, the college requires you to provide a pre-placement evaluation assessment. This includes the evaluation of the potential placement and yourself.

Task 1- Self-evaluation of the student

Your ability and achievements to date Your previous experience

Your discipline- and work-related preferences Any special support requirements you may need

In general terms, your personality. Are you shy or outgoing, dependent or independent?

Task 2 - You are required to provide information on the following when evaluating potential placement opportunities:

1) The placement provider/host institution.

The nature of the company or institution (mission/scope of industry/company profile) The nature of placement work envisaged
The role and status of the student while on placement
The support for learning, e.g. induction, teaching/training provision, library and/or computing facilities available for the student
The culture of the host institution: Is it supportive of students as individuals?

2) Evaluate the organisational structure of the workplace?
Here you will need to identify and explain the different types of organisation structures such as Functional, Divisional, Matrix structures etc.

3) Analyse the Internal, External and Industry Environment in which the work placement operates.

Here you will explain the various business environments, commenting on issues or drivers of change and how they can affect the activities of the organisation. Include commentaries on PESTLE framework, Five Forces and Resource audit

4) Using the theories of management evaluate the management practices in the work placement.

Here you will need to consider the impact of the theories of management on current management practices in organisations. The theories of management include: Classical, Behavioural, Human relations, Contingency theories etc.

25-39 FX/R Referral. Some more work is required before the credit can be awarded. Little evidence of required knowledge, understanding or appreciation of relevant theoretical concepts. Analysis is absent and % application abilities are non-existent. Work has little accuracy in relation to the brief -if any, and overall output is bellow requirements. 0-24% F Fail. Considerable further work is required. Output is unacceptable. Overall work does not meet the requirements of the brief and is insufficient to achieve a pass.

D Satisfactory. Although fair, work has significant shortcomings. Required knowledge and understanding 43-49 of appropriate theoretical concepts and their associated analytical techniques are limited. Some degree % of accuracy and adequate research abilities are indicated. Analysis and application are superficial as is the ability to interpret data and contextualise. Adequate references to relevant bibliography. E Sufficient. Overall output is weak and is characterised by lack of focus, poor grammar and spelling 40-42 mistakes. However, despite limitations work meets the minimum criteria for a basic pass since it indicates adequate research abilities, adequate understanding of appropriate theoretical concepts and % their associated analytical techniques and has basic references to relevant bibliography.

C Good. Generally sound work but with a number of notable errors. Required knowledge and understanding of appropriate theoretical concepts and their associated analytical techniques are reasonable but research, analysis and application abilities are restricted as are linkages between 50-59 theory and practice. There is a tendency for assertion rather than valid arguments based on analysis % but interpretative and evaluative abilities are indicated in a somewhat good context. Relatively good references to relevant bibliography.

B Very Good. Above the average standard output but with some errors. Required knowledge and understanding of appropriate theoretical concepts and their associated analytical techniques is evident and overall work is of a very good level. Ability to employ, contextualise and link relevant theoretical concepts between them is very good but sometimes broad in nature. Analysis, 60-69 interpretation of data and application abilities are effective and answers are clear indicating independent thought and reflection. Overall output is literate, focused, evaluative and coherent, but % arguments are not consistent at the same level all of the times. Good overall ability of using research findings to develop future objectives and appropriate strategies on the face of identified challenges and opportunities. Appropriate range of references to relevant bibliography.
