BRIEF:
Pneumatic and Hydraulic Construction Company (P&HCC) is embarking on some several new innovative projects, and you have been assigned as part of a team to carry out the following tasks. In your reports to the company. which should not be more than 250 words on each task, should include well labelled and clear illustrations for each task.
Task 1
Your team should visit some canals located within your geographical locations and discuss various uses these canals can be employed to solve problems of power and or transportation.
Task 2
Your team should under study different types of pumps and determine suitable ones to supply water to housing estates with different high-rise buildings. You must show clearly the type of losses the pumps will have to overcome in the system.
Task 3
In a very large farm, castor oil of specific gravity 0.96 and dynamic viscosity of 0.65 Pa.s is pumped over a distance of 3 km through a 100 mm diameter tube at a mass flow rate of 150 x 103 kg/hr for bottling and packaging.
Your team should determine:
i. the volumetric flow rate,
ii. whether the flow is laminar or turbulent,
iii. the head loss along the pipe,
iv. the power required to maintain the flow if mechanical efficiency of the system is 85%.
v. Discuss the types of head losses in the system.
Task 4
Your team should under study a turbine system to irrigate a very large farm through a nearby canal. You must clearly discuss the impact of jets on the turbine blades.
Task 5
In a plan to heavy prevent flooding through drainage into an estate, a 15 cm diameter pipe was designed to divert the drainage in form of a jet of water, which will exert not more than a force of 3 kN in the direction of flow, against a stationary flat wall inclined at 30° to the axis of the stream.
Your team should determine the mass flow rate of the jet and the power of the jet impacting on the wall.
